The Government of Manipur has brought into force The Manipur Names of Places Act, 2024, aimed at regulating the naming and renaming of places across the state. The Act was officially published in the Extraordinary Gazette dated March 15, 2024, and came into effect on the same day.
Under the provisions of the Act, no place in the state can be named or renamed without the prior concurrence of the Land Resources Department. To oversee its implementation, the state government has constituted the Place Names Committee through an official order issued on December 19, 2024.
The Committee is tasked with reviewing and recommending changes to place names and will submit its reports periodically to the government for consideration.
All administrative departments, Deputy Commissioners, and relevant authorities have been directed to strictly comply with the provisions of the Act. Violations will attract penalties under Section 13 of the Act, including imprisonment ranging from one to three years and fines between ₹50,000 and ₹2 lakh.
The government has emphasized strict adherence to the new law to ensure consistency and accuracy in the naming of places across Manipur.
