The “Women For Trees” campaign gained further momentum with a tree plantation programme held today at Kabowakching, Nambol, Bishnupur district. The event was jointly organised by the Nambol Municipal Council, Town Planning Department, Manipur, and the Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA) under the theme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam / Upal Ama Emagi Mingda.”
The initiative is part of the AMRUT Mitra campaign under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0), aimed at promoting urban afforestation and sustainable development.
Caretaker Chairperson of Nambol Municipality, Ch. Basanta Singh, and Chief Town Planner and State Mission Director of AMRUT 2.0, Nongthombam Benju Singh, attended the programme along with municipal councillors and officials from MUDA and the Town Planning Department.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) associated with the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-NULM), alongside local residents. Saplings were planted near the Kabowakching Makha Leikai Pukhri Achouba, the site of a water body rejuvenation project under AMRUT 2.0.
Addressing the gathering, Benju Singh emphasized the role of community-led afforestation and women’s leadership in environmental conservation. He encouraged SHG members to take care of the trees “as their own mothers” and highlighted how increased green cover can contribute to climate resilience. The Caretaker Chairperson also motivated the SHGs to tend the saplings with dedication for the overall development of the community.
Around 170 saplings were planted during the drive, all of which were geo-tagged for regular monitoring every three months to ensure their survival. Under the campaign, SHG members will maintain the planted trees for a minimum of two years.
The “Women For Trees” campaign was launched on June 5, 2025 — World Environment Day — in Imphal, followed by a plantation drive in Mayang Imphal on June 20. The next phase is scheduled for Moirang on June 25.
The initiative underscores a growing commitment to green urban development and community-driven environmental action across Manipur.
