The Mizoram government will begin biometric registration of more than 32,000 Myanmar nationals taking shelter in the state, with the process scheduled to commence in July across all 11 districts.
Home Secretary Vanlalmawia stated that the registration will be carried out through the Foreigner Identification Portal developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). “All preparations are complete, and district officials have been trained,” he said.
District-level committees, led by Deputy Commissioners, will conduct the enrolment process, while a state-level committee chaired by Home Minister K. Sapdanga will oversee and monitor the registration drive.
The initiative is aimed at documenting refugees who fled Myanmar following the 2021 military coup. The exercise, initially delayed due to issues with the data collection format provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs, resumed after the format was revised to reflect the legal status of the displaced persons in Mizoram.
Final training for district teams by NIC officials is scheduled for this week, and the enrolment is expected to officially begin in early July.
Champhai district hosts the highest number of Myanmar nationals at 13,586, followed by Lawngtlai (6,017), Siaha (5,036), and Aizawl (3,669). Kolasib district has the lowest number with 129 individuals.
