Security forces have arrested two active members of proscribed insurgent groups in Manipur and recovered firearms and ammunition from their possession, police said on Thursday.
According to a senior police officer, an active cadre of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) was apprehended on Tuesday from one of the floating huts in Loktak Lake, located in Bishnupur district. A 9 mm pistol along with ammunition was seized from the militant.
The officer added that the floating huts were being used as makeshift transit camps and hideouts by militant groups. Several household items linked to the cadres were recovered during the operation, and the huts were subsequently dismantled.
In a follow-up search, additional arms and ammunition were recovered from Nachou Awang Leikai area in the same district.
In a separate operation, police arrested an active member of the banned UNLF (P) from his residence in Soibam Leikai, Imphal East district. Two 9 mm pistols and ammunition were seized from his possession.
Police said the overall law and order situation in the state remained normal. Search operations and area domination exercises are being carried out regularly across fringe and vulnerable areas of various districts as part of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security. These operations have continued in the wake of ethnic violence that erupted two years ago.
