Imphal, June 27: The 17th Manipuri State Film Awards were announced on 26 June 2025 at the Manipur State Film Development Society’s (MSFDS) preview theatre, with a historic moment for queer representation in Manipuri cinema. ONENESS, the first Manipuri feature film to openly explore same-sex relationships, clinched two major awards, marking a significant milestone for both the state’s film industry and LGBTQ+ narratives.

The film, directed by Priyakanta Laishram, has been honored with the prestigious Jury Special Award (Feature Film), awarded to Laishram as well as the producers, Roushil Singla and Priyakanta Laishram. Based on the tragic real-life story of Ivan Martin, a young queer boy murdered by a family member for his identity. ONENESS has been praised for its powerful storytelling, emotional depth, and social relevance.

Veteran Manipuri actress Maya Choudhury, who portrayed the role of Anna Martin, Ivan’s conflicted mother, was awarded Best Supporting Actor – Female for her nuanced and heartbreaking performance. In a particularly poignant highlight, this award marks Choudhury’s first-ever film award in her remarkable 28-year-long career in Manipuri cinema. Earlier this year, she also received her first Pan-Northeast India Best Actress nomination for ONENESS at the Prag Cine Awards 2025.

The impact of ONENESS extends beyond regional acclaim. The film has been screened at multiple national and international film festivals, gaining widespread recognition for its bold narrative and sensitive portrayal of queer identity and family dynamics. Priyakanta Laishram, already considered one of the most promising voices in new-age Manipuri cinema, was also awarded Best Director – Northeast at the 2025 Prag Cine Awards.
