Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday said that BJP legislators held a crucial meeting focused on restoring peace and forming a popular government in the state.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting at the BJP state headquarters in Imphal, Biren Singh said, “We discussed the frustration among the people and the hardships endured by internally displaced persons. Our state party president convened this meeting after recently meeting national leaders in Delhi.”
He stated that the discussions centred on reinstating a government that reflects the people’s will and addressing the ongoing unrest in the state.
The former CM also welcomed recent initiatives by civil society organisations to engage with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), calling it a positive step. “I appreciate organisations like AMUCO, COCOMI and FOCS for holding talks with the MHA. It’s a good beginning. I also heard that our Kuki brothers are going as well. We have signalled that legislators are ready. I have faith that peace will be restored soon,” said Biren Singh, who stepped down as Chief Minister in February.
State BJP president A Sharda Devi said the meeting was an informal gathering over tea, where a report was shared about her recent discussions with national leaders. “We reiterated the people’s desire for a popular government and also discussed issues like the Gwaltabi incident, where the state’s name was removed from a government bus. So far, there has been no negative response from the Centre,” she said.
