Renowned Manipuri classical dancer and Padma Shri awardee Thiyam Suryamukhi Devi passed away at the age of 85 on Sunday, June 29, at her residence in Keishampat, Imphal West district, following a prolonged illness.
Suryamukhi Devi was among the 113 distinguished recipients of the Padma Shri award this year. Although she was honoured at the official ceremony held on May 27, 2025, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, she could not attend due to health complications.
Born and raised in Keishampat Leimajam Leikai, Imphal West, Suryamukhi Devi had earlier shared in a media interaction that her passion for classical dance was nurtured by her family members and local elders who inspired her artistic journey.
Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed deep sorrow over her passing. In a post on his X handle, he wrote: “Deeply saddened by the passing of Padma Shri Smt. Thiyam Suryamukhi Devi, a towering figure in Manipuri classical dance. With her passing, we have lost a priceless jewel of Manipur’s cultural landscape. Her graceful artistry and dedication to preserving our cultural heritage will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to her family, admirers, and the cultural fraternity. May her soul rest in peace.”
