In the 123rd episode of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Meghalaya’s traditional eri silk, which recently received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. He highlighted the efforts of the state’s tribal communities, especially the Khasi community, for preserving the craft through generations.

Modi referred to eri silk as “Ahinsa Silk” because its production does not involve killing the silkworms. He said the silk holds strong global appeal due to rising demand for environment-friendly products.

The Prime Minister also noted the unique qualities of the silk, which keeps the body warm in winter and cool in summer. Applauding the role of women-led self-help groups in Meghalaya, he said they are playing a key role in expanding eri silk production to larger markets.
