Agartala, July 04, 2025: The Unakoti district administration has directly benefited over 37,800 tribal residents during a 15-day outreach campaign held between June 15 and June 30. The initiative was part of the nationwide observation of ‘Janjati Gaurav Diwas’ commemorating the birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda on November 15, an event declared by the Government of India in 2021 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
As part of the observance, Unakoti launched ‘Dharti Aaba Jan Bhagidari Abhiyan’ and ‘Awareness and Benefit Assurance Camps’ in 17 tribal-dominated gram panchayats. These camps delivered a wide range of government services at the doorstep of tribal households, aiming to ensure justice, development and dignity for indigenous communities.
“This campaign is not only a tribute to our tribal heroes but a step toward transforming their living conditions through real, measurable actions,” said Dr. Tamal Majumdar, District Magistrate and Collector of Unakoti district at a press briefing on Thursday.
A total of 279 special administrative camps were organized across 17 gram panchayats, where services like Aadhaar enrollment, Ayushman Bharat card issuance, ration card distribution, caste certificate delivery, land patta provision, and pension scheme enrollment were made available.
The camps also facilitated enrolment under flagship central schemes such as: PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, PM Jan Dhan Yojana, PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, Ujjwala Yojana, Suraksha Samriddhi Yojana
In terms of infrastructure, 19 new Anganwadi centres were opened to boost child nutrition and early education access in remote areas. The administration also reported successful completion of works related to road repairs, rural electrification, safe drinking water supply, and housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
In addition to service delivery, the campaign focused on cultural and social awareness. Local artists performed Jhumur dance, celebrating tribal identity, while a specially staged drama highlighted key social issues such as child marriage prevention and the fight against substance abuse.
“Culture and community are at the heart of development. Through performances and street plays, we have tried to integrate awareness into celebration,” said Vidyasagar Debbarma, District Inspector, Social Welfare Department.
Dedicated stalls were also set up by the Health Department, Sub-Divisional Administration, and Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) to offer direct health screenings and livelihood consultations to visitors.
Senior officials including Additional District Magistrates Arghya Saha and L. Darlong, Senior Deputy Magistrate Kamlesh Dhar, and others were present at the press meet, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance.
The district’s multi-pronged approach combining administrative services, cultural engagement and infrastructure delivery has been widely appreciated as a model of community-driven governance.
“Unakoti’s effort is a shining example of how public participation and targeted government action can together uplift tribal communities,” Dr. Majumdar added.
With the success of this initiative, Unakoti district continues to set a benchmark for tribal development under the wider umbrella of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyay Maha Abhiyan’ and ‘Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Utkarsh Gram Abhiyan’, both launched by the central government for holistic tribal empowerment.
