Man Sentenced To Life For 2019 Murder Of Woman In North Tripura District

Agartala, July 05, 2025: A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a woman in 2019, following a verdict delivered by the Sessions Court in Dharmanagar, North Tripura district.

According to a press release issued by Tripura Police on Friday, the accused, 36-year-old Sanjoy Ghosh of Sanicharra village under Churaibari Police Station, was found guilty of killing Kanchanbala Nath at her residence in East Hurua, Gowala Basti, under the jurisdiction of Dharmanagar Police Station.

The crime occurred during the night of June 29–30, 2019. Ghosh was arrested soon after the incident and subsequently charged under Sections 302 (murder) and 380 (theft in a dwelling house) of the Indian Penal Code.

The court sentenced Ghosh to rigorous life imprisonment under Section 302, along with a fine of ₹10,000. In case of default in payment, he will have to serve an additional six months of simple imprisonment. Under Section 380, he was awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a ₹5,000 fine, with a default penalty of three months of simple imprisonment.

Police credited the conviction to the detailed investigation conducted by Woman Sub-Inspector (WSI) Swarna Debbarma of Dharmanagar Women Police Station, who filed the charge sheet that secured the court’s judgment.
