Heavy and continuous rainfall has triggered severe flooding across Nagaland, resulting in the death of three people and large-scale disruption to air and road transport, officials confirmed on Monday.
In Dimapur, three individuals, including a woman, died due to electrocution after floodwaters entered their homes in Burma Camp and Kuda Village. Many parts of the district were submerged, with residents forced to wade through water up to three feet deep.
Flight operations at Dimapur Airport were suspended on Sunday as floodwater inundated the runway and parking area. Several flights, including those operated by IndiGo and Air India Express, were cancelled, according to the Airports Authority of India.
National Highway 29, which connects Dimapur to Kohima, was blocked due to landslides caused by the incessant downpour, severely affecting vehicular movement.
Dimapur, Kohima, and Niuland districts were among the worst affected. In Niuland, nearly 70 villages reported damage to homes, paddy fields, bridges, and fisheries. Boats were deployed for rescue operations in several flooded areas.
Dimapur Deputy Commissioner Dr Tinojongshi Chang said that 52 people were rescued from inundated locations. He noted that water levels have begun to recede as rainfall subsided overnight. However, the India Meteorological Department has predicted further rain in the coming days.
Authorities remain on high alert and have advised residents to avoid flood-prone zones and follow safety measures.
