Agartala, July 08, 2025: In a prompt response to the ongoing drinking water crisis in Kailashahar, Tripura Social Welfare and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy made a surprise visit on Monday to assess the situation on the ground.
The minister began his inspection at the office of the Drinking Water and Sanitation (DWS) department, where he was visibly shocked by the condition of the main building, which has been lying defunct for years.
“I was not aware the infrastructure was in such a neglected state. Immediate steps will be taken to construct a new office building to ensure smooth functioning of the department,” Roy told reporters during the visit.
Later, the minister visited the overhead reservoir in Durgapur, the main water source for the area where water supply has been disrupted due to a long-standing mechanical failure.
“The water pump here has not been working for quite some time. This has severely impacted thousands of residents in Durgapur and nearby areas,” he said. “At present, water is being supplied from the Govindapur Water Project as an interim measure. But the faulty pump will be repaired soon to restore normal supply.”
Accompanying the minister were Kailashahar Municipal Council Chairperson Chapala Deb Roy, Tripura State Waqf Board Chairman Mabasar Ali, and senior officials of the DWS department.
Roy assured that urgent directives have been issued to the department to resolve the crisis and restore regular drinking water supply within the next few days.
