A 38-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband and burying his body within the compound of their residence in Joymoti Nagar, Pandu area of Guwahati, police said on Monday.

The victim, identified as Sabial Rahman, a scrap dealer, was allegedly killed by his wife, Rahima Khatun, on the night of June 26 following a domestic altercation. Police said Rahman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

After committing the crime, Khatun allegedly buried the body inside the premises and told others that her husband had left for Kerala in search of work. The incident came to light after Rahman’s brother filed a missing person report on July 12.

Khatun later approached Jalukbari police station on July 13 and confessed to the crime. “She admitted that there was a quarrel, during which her husband died. She then buried the body inside their compound,” said Padmanav Baruah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Guwahati City.

Police suspect that others may have assisted her in disposing of the body. “We believe two to three people may have helped her, as it seems unlikely she could have managed the burial alone,” Baruah added.

Further investigation is underway.
