Guwahati, July 16: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has hit back at Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of saying that the CM “will definitely be sent to jail” during a closed-door meeting with the Congress Political Affairs Committee in Assam. Sarma responded on social media, saying that Gandhi “conveniently forgotten” that he himself is out on bail in multiple criminal cases across the country.
According to Sarma, Gandhi’s exact words were: “Take it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail.” The CM claimed that Gandhi came to Assam specifically to make these remarks, and sarcastically wished him to “enjoy the hospitality of Assam for the rest of the day.”
Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge are currently on a day-long visit to Assam, holding discussions with party functionaries to prepare a roadmap for the future. The meetings, held at a hotel near the Guwahati airport and Chaygaon, aimed to strengthen the organisation and prepare for the challenges ahead, with Assembly elections due in the state next year.
Assam Pradesh Congress President Gaurav Gogoi had earlier posted on social media that in-depth discussions were held during the closed-door meeting to bolster the party’s organisational structure. The development comes amid growing tensions between the BJP-led state government and the Congress party.
