Agartala, July 18, 2025: In a significant step toward strengthening Tripura’s energy infrastructure and promoting green energy, the state will soon host an 800 MW Pumped Storage Project (PSP), the first of its kind in the North-Eastern region after Purulia’s 900 MW Bagmundi project. The National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) will implement the project, marking a major milestone in Tripura’s journey toward energy self-reliance.
The announcement was made by Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath during the 29th North Eastern Region Power Committee (NERPC) meeting held in Guwahati on Friday.
The Minister also made headlines during the meeting by successfully opposing a proposed hike in gas prices for the OTPC Palatana power project. The hike, discussed in the Technical Committee meeting a day earlier, could have significantly increased power tariffs across the North East. Nath argued that the proposal was “unjustified and harmful to public interest,” leading to its rejection by the NERPC.
Reaffirming the state’s commitment to green and clean energy, Nath highlighted Tripura’s achievements in solar energy generation, including the installation of over 45,000 solar street lights, nearly 5,000 solar pumps, and multiple solar micro-grids — collectively generating around 26 MW of solar power. He emphasized the state’s efforts to align with the National Green Hydrogen Mission and said energy storage solutions are being explored to manage peak-hour demand effectively.
He also announced that Tripura has signed a ₹2,275 crore agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to upgrade its power distribution network. Key components of this plan include revamping the Rokhia gas-based power plant in Sepahijala district, doubling its generation capacity, and enhancing the output of the Doombur hydropower project from 5 MW to 10 MW.
Additionally, a long-term roadmap has been finalized for upgrading the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) in Tripura, extending to 2031–32. This includes new substations, transmission lines, and upgrades to existing infrastructure to support growing demand.
Senior officials including Additional Secretary of the Power Department Udayan Sinha, TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu, and PTL General Manager Ranjan Debbarman also participated in the NERPC meeting.
