Shillong, July 24 — In response to intensified eviction operations in Assam, the Meghalaya government has instructed all deputy commissioners to remain vigilant and coordinate with security forces to prevent any influx of displaced individuals into the state.

The directive, issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Shakil P Ahamed, urged district officials to work closely with police and border agencies to secure vulnerable entry points along the Assam-Meghalaya border. The move follows eviction actions across districts such as Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Hojai, and Nagaon, where many alleged illegal immigrants have been uprooted from forest and government lands.

“To ensure law and order is maintained and any potential influx is effectively controlled, all deputy commissioners are hereby directed to adopt proactive surveillance and precautionary measures,” the circular stated.

Simultaneously, the Border Security Force (BSF) has strengthened its watch over key inter-state locations. In recent weeks, BSF personnel apprehended several Bangladeshi nationals for crossing into Meghalaya without proper documentation.
