Agartala, July 26, 2025: In a remarkable demonstration of medical expertise and public trust, Govinda Ballabh Pant Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital has successfully treated a young woman suffering from a rare and complex brain hemorrhage, highlighting the rising capabilities of Tripura’s public healthcare system.
Monica, a 28-year-old woman, was admitted to GBP Hospital on July 15, 2025, with a brain hemorrhage. Assistant Professor of Neurology, Dr. Abir Lal Nath, recommended an urgent Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) and coiling procedure. However, the family, unsure of the hospital’s capabilities, took her to CMC Vellore for a second opinion only to be advised the same treatment there.
“Even after visiting Vellore, they were told exactly what we had recommended. That reaffirmed our diagnosis,” said Dr. Nath. After returning to Agartala, the family sought a referral from Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha. Instead, the Chief Minister assured them of the hospital’s ability to perform the complex procedure locally.
“When they approached me, I told them such advanced treatments are now available in GBP itself. There’s no need to go outside the state,” Dr. Saha said.
The situation turned critical when the patient suffered a third hemorrhage. She was readmitted to GBP Hospital on July 20. Dr. Nath assured the family that the entire procedure, which would have cost nearly ₹10 lakh in a private hospital, would be done free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
On July 23, a medical team led by Dr. Nath, along with Dr. Surjit Pal, Dr. Monimoy Debbarma, Sister-in-Charge Sevika Dutta, and support staff — including Pranakrishna Dev, Titiksha Majumdar, Sanjay Ghosh, Manas Dutta, and Debabrata Debnath — successfully completed the aneurysm coiling.
“Despite the complexity of the case and the size of the aneurysm, the procedure was a success. The entire team worked with dedication,” Dr. Nath added emotionally.
Following the operation, the patient stabilized. Her mother and two sisters expressed heartfelt gratitude to the medical team. “We’re overwhelmed. We were hesitant, but today we’re thankful we trusted GBP,” said Monica’s elder sister.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, Health Director Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Majumdar, and Health Secretary Kiran Gitte were apprised of the milestone.
A Health Department spokesperson stated, “This incident is not just a story of successful treatment, it is a story of faith, patience, and determination. It sends a strong message that advanced neurointervention is possible within Tripura.”
The Neurology Department of GBP Hospital has appealed to the people to place their trust in state-run health services. “This success is a step forward, and though the journey of strengthening neurointervention is ongoing, this life saved makes the fight worthwhile,” said Dr. Nath.
Monica now looks forward to a second chance at life filled with hope, courage, and renewed faith in her state’s healthcare system.
