Agartala, July 26, 2025: Two Bangladeshi nationals suspected of cross-border smuggling were killed in a firing incident involving the Border Security Force (BSF) near Tripura’s Gate No. 63 along the Belonia-Banshpaduya border late on Thursday night.

The deceased have been identified as Zakir Hossain Millat (20) and Mohammad Yasin Liton (45), both residents of Banshpaduya village under Parshuram Municipality in Bangladesh. According to local sources, the incident occurred when three individuals allegedly attempted to smuggle garments, cosmetics, and other items from Indian territory into Bangladesh.

Personnel from the BSF’s 43rd Battalion reportedly intercepted the group, triggering a confrontation that led to the fatal shooting. Mohammad Yasin Liton died on the spot, while Millat and a third individual, identified as Mohammad Afsar (30), sustained injuries and managed to flee across the border.

Later, Bangladeshi authorities admitted both injured men to Parshuram Hospital. Millat, who was in critical condition, was being transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital when he succumbed to his injuries en route. Afsar continues to receive treatment.

Liton’s body was recovered by Belonia police and taken to the Belonia Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem. While the autopsy was completed by Friday afternoon, the body had not yet been handed over to family members due to pending legal formalities.

As of now, the BSF has not released an official statement regarding the incident. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi authorities are said to have sought clarification from their Indian counterparts over the fatal encounter. Investigations from both sides are currently underway.
