The 7th Sarathi Samman Diwas was observed in Gangtok on Sunday with reverence and enthusiasm, celebrating the vital contributions of Sikkim’s driver community. The event was attended by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang along with his spouse Krishna Rai, who extended their greetings and appreciation to the drivers and their families.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister lauded the dedication, resilience, and essential services of the driver community, highlighting their role in connecting people, facilitating economic activities, and ensuring smooth public transport services in the state.
A key highlight of the celebration was the announcement of a new medical insurance scheme for licensed commercial taxi drivers operating within Sikkim. The scheme will provide annual coverage of up to ₹5 lakh for hospitalization due to illness or accidents. Initially, 5,000 drivers will be covered under the scheme, with plans for future expansion.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged the contributions of government vehicle drivers, private transport operators, truck and tipper drivers involved in logistics, and tourist vehicle drivers who represent the state’s hospitality. Special recognition was given to women drivers—mothers, daughters, and daughters-in-law—who were praised for their strength and determination in balancing family responsibilities with professional duties.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to driver welfare, the Chief Minister thanked the entire driving community for their tireless service and called for continued unity and pride in working towards the progress of Sikkim.
Sarathi Samman Diwas, now in its seventh year, continues to serve as a meaningful occasion to honour the efforts of drivers who play a key role in the daily life and development of the state.
