The Assam cabinet has decided to hand over the investigation into the suspected suicide of a Public Works Department (PWD) assistant engineer in Bongaigaon to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The decision was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press conference on Thursday.
The assistant engineer was found dead in her rented apartment on July 22. She was reportedly under pressure from senior officials to overlook alleged malpractices in the construction of a mini-stadium in Bongaigaon, leading to suspicions of suicide.
A seven-member Special Investigating Team (SIT) was initially constituted to probe the incident. The transfer of the case to the CBI aims to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.
