Agartala, August 06, 2025: Following the intervention of Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, the Centre has taken note of the deteriorating condition of the Kamalpur-Khowai National Highway, paving the way for much-needed repair and reconstruction work.
In a significant development, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari responded to a letter sent by the Chief Minister on May 10, in which the latter highlighted the urgent need for repairing the 12-km stretch of the highway.
According to official sources, Union Minister Gadkari, in his written reply dated July 22, confirmed that a team from the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) conducted a field inspection of the damaged road from June 23 to June 27. “A detailed report of the inspection will be submitted to the Union Ministry by August 15,” Gadkari stated.
To further assess the situation and expedite the repair process, the Managing Director of NHIDCL, Dr. Krishna Kumar is scheduled to visit Tripura on August 10. He will review the status of ongoing construction and maintenance work across several national highways in the state.
Chief Minister Dr. Saha has reportedly made repeated appeals to the Union Ministry for the restoration of this crucial alternative road. “I have personally discussed the matter several times with the Hon’ble Union Minister over the phone,” the Chief Minister said.
He also directed the Secretary of the Public Works Department, Kiran Gitte, to coordinate closely with central authorities and monitor the progress of the highway restoration. “This road is critical for regional connectivity and immediate attention is essential,” Dr. Saha stressed.
The response from the Centre marks a significant step forward in addressing longstanding infrastructure issues in the state.
