The Nayabazar Jorethang Nagar Panchayat (NJNP) has launched a dedicated Self Help Group (SHG) market in Jorethang as part of its initiative to promote grassroots entrepreneurship and community empowerment across Sikkim.
The inaugural event of the Swayam Sikkim SHG Mela was held on Wednesday, jointly organised by NJNP and the Sikkim Rural Livelihood Mission under the Rural Development Department, Government of Sikkim.
Madan Cintury, MLA of Salghari-Zoom constituency and Advisor to the Departments of Transport and Skill Development, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He inaugurated the SHG market, interacted with the SHG members, and inspected the various stalls set up at the venue.
In his address, the MLA reiterated Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s commitment to strengthening SHGs in the state. He encouraged SHG members to make the most of the opportunities provided and highlighted the market’s role in offering fresh organic produce to the public. He also suggested that NJNP and local panchayats identify a permanent and more suitable location for the market and assured his continued support for its development.
NJNP President Pavitra Manav expressed appreciation for the Chief Minister’s support and underlined the market’s importance in facilitating the growth of SHGs by providing a reliable platform for the sale of organic goods. He urged more SHGs to join and make use of the opportunity to expand their enterprises.
Director of SIRD&PR, Bishal Mukhia, recalled the historic SHG Sammelan of 2019 where the foundation for this initiative was laid. He highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance SHG capabilities through training in digital literacy and financial inclusion, including collaborations with banks to ensure smooth financial operations.
He also noted that the SHG market is envisioned as a central hub for organic products in Sikkim and called upon media representatives to help raise awareness about its benefits.
The event was attended by Upa-Adhakshya of Soreng Zilla, C. B. Shah Shankar, NJNP Vice President Manjari Rai, Panchayat members, SDM Jorethang Yogen Syangden, MEO Dilip Dong, along with officials from various departments.
The SHG market will operate twice a week, every Wednesday and Sunday, offering a platform for SHG members to promote their businesses, boost livelihood opportunities, and contribute to the local economy.
