Agartala, August 07, 2025: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has initiated a suo motu case in connection with the alleged assault on two doctors at GB Pant Hospital, calling the incident a serious breach of human rights and seeking accountability from both health and police authorities.
On August 04 last, the incident took place when two on-duty medical officers were allegedly manhandled by miscreants reportedly relatives of a patient within the hospital premises. Despite the presence of security personnel, the doctors were attacked while performing their duties.
Chairperson of the THRC Justice Arindam Lodh expressed strong concern over the failure to ensure the safety of frontline medical professionals. “The manhandling of medical officers at their workplace is a clear violation of human rights,” he noted in the official order, further emphasizing the disturbing lapse in security arrangements.
Taking cognisance of media reports, the Commission has directed the Director of Health Services and the Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, to submit independent investigation reports by August 21. The Health Director has been asked to clarify why adequate protection was not provided, while the SP must detail the actions taken against the culprits and the preventive measures adopted since.
“This incident reflects a growing threat to healthcare workers who continue to serve under intense pressure,” the Commission stated, calling for stronger protective mechanisms in critical institutions like GB Pant Hospital.
In light of rising cases of violence against doctors nationwide, the THRC’s intervention highlights the urgent need to safeguard hospital environments and reinforce institutional responsibility in protecting medical personnel.
