The Assam government on Thursday evicted 114 families from village grazing reserve (VGR) land in Phukondoli village, located under the Naoboicha revenue circle of Lakhimpur district.

The eviction drive, carried out amid tight security arrangements, resulted in the clearance of 78.21 acres (around 237 bighas) of government land allegedly encroached upon by the families, officials said.

District authorities confirmed that eviction notices had been issued on July 31. Ahead of the operation, nearly 25 percent of the families vacated the land voluntarily.
