Agartala, August 11, 2025: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL) and the State Pollution Control Board to submit a detailed report by August 29 on measures taken to curb severe environmental pollution in the capital and surrounding areas.
The directive follows a complaint lodged by Sujit Deb of D.C. Nagar, Mohanpur Sub-Division, highlighting alarming pollution levels in localities including Nepali Basti, Beltoli, Palpara, Damdamiya, and Sen Para. According to the complaint, indiscriminate dumping of hazardous waste has led to mosquito and fly infestations, triggering widespread health issues among residents.
THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh noted that similar conditions prevail in Agartala’s Battala area, where continuous dumping of rotten fruits, fish, and other waste materials has created severe health hazards for commuters and residents.
Before formally taking up the matter, the Commission issued notices to the AMC Commissioner and the ASCL Administrator, urging immediate action to remove waste and prevent further pollution. It also added the State Pollution Control Board to the proceedings, instructing its chairman to take the issue seriously and report back within the stipulated time frame.
“All authorities concerned are duty-bound to protect the environment, which is essential for our survival and well-being,” the Commission stated in its order.
