Gangtok, August 14: The Education Department of the Government of Sikkim has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Organic Microgreens Private Limited (OMG), an AgriTech social enterprise founded by Suchith S. Sindhe and Sourabh S. Sindhe, to introduce sustainable farming education in PM SHRI (Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India) Schools across the state.

Under the partnership, six PM SHRI Schools in Sikkim will set up OMG Labs—specialized learning spaces where students will cultivate microgreens, nutrient-dense vegetable greens rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The initiative aims to provide hands-on training in sustainable agriculture, promote nutritional awareness, and foster environmental stewardship among students.

The project aligns with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the PM SHRI Scheme’s green school initiatives, and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By incorporating microgreens into school midday meals, the initiative supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), while enhancing experiential learning and vocational skills in line with NEP 2020.

The labs will also focus on sustainable farming practices such as organic cultivation, rainwater harvesting, and composting, contributing to SDG 13 (Climate Action). Additionally, students will gain entrepreneurial skills by learning to package and market surplus produce, supporting skill development and industry linkages promoted under the PM SHRI Scheme.

Initially, 12 teachers from the six PM SHRI Schools have received training on organic microgreens. These schools are expected to serve as mentorship hubs, sharing best practices with other schools in Sikkim and across India.

The collaboration marks a step toward integrating green innovation into education, ensuring students learn and practice the principles of sustainability, health, and community engagement, positioning Sikkim’s PM SHRI Schools as models for nationwide implementation.
