Mizoram: 79th Independence Day Celebrated In Lunglei With Grand Ceremony

The 79th Independence Day of India was celebrated in Lunglei today. The main function at C. Ṭhuamluaia Mual was attended by Home, UD&PA and DP&AR Minister K. Sapdanga as the Chief Guest.

In the run-up to the occasion, government offices, important institutions, and private residences across Lunglei District displayed the National Flag from August 2 to 15 as part of the nationwide Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. On the day, the Chief Guest hoisted the National Flag at 9:00 a.m., followed by a ceremonial parade of 27 contingents and the Chief Guest’s Independence Day address.

In the speech, K. Sapdanga paid tribute to India’s leaders and freedom fighters, called for continued unity and progress, and acknowledged security forces, NGOs, churches, community groups, and citizens for supporting the State Government in the development of Mizoram and Lunglei District. Key initiatives highlighted included the Mizoram Bana Kaih (Handholding) Scheme—under which CM’s Special Package and loan assistance are provided to 410 progress partners in Lunglei District—PM-KISAN payments to 15,730 farmers, major infrastructure and water supply projects, healthcare under MUHCS, improvements in schools and skill training, social welfare programmes, housing assistance, ration card reforms, and ongoing economic and industrial development.

The Minister also noted Lunglei’s recognition in Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 as the “Promising Swachh Shehar of Mizoram” and encouraged continued efforts in cleanliness, youth development, and drug prevention.

The ceremonial parade included 4 armed contingents, 9 unarmed contingents, 11 school contingents, and 3 pipe bands. In the parade awards, Baptist HSS NCC Army secured 1st place in the unarmed category, while 2nd Bn MAP English Medium School took 1st place in the school category. Awards were also presented for the STOP Diarrhoea Poster/Flyer Making Competition and sports, including tennis and arm wrestling. Felicitations were given to Governor’s Gold Medal recipient Assistant Sub-Inspector Zothansanga (Lunglei DEF), Governor’s Silver Medal recipient Assistant Sub-Inspector Lalṭhabuanga (Lunglei DEF), and C. Lalnunpuia (Venglai Lunglei), who won Gold and Silver medals in the 110 kg arm wrestling category at the 2025 World Police & Fire Games in Birmingham, USA.

The celebration concluded with an ‘At Home’ reception at the Circuit House hosted by the Chief Guest and attended by MLAs, officials, community leaders, and special invitees. As part of the celebrations, the Independence Day Committee distributed ₹40,000 worth of aid and essential supplies to hospitals, welfare homes, and orphanages in the district.

Ahead of Independence Day, the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and Tiranga Rally on August 13 saw active participation from school students. Tiranga exhibitions were held across Lunglei, Lungsen, Tlabung, and Bunghmun, while four selected schools in Lunglei town were decorated in Tricolour themes.
