Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that the state government is working to eradicate child marriage in Assam by 2026.

Speaking during the Independence Day Tri-Colour hoisting ceremony, Sarma cited improvements in the state’s law and order situation, which he said have contributed to a reduction in crimes.

He noted that more than 6,500 cases of child marriage have been registered in the state, with chargesheets filed in 95 per cent of these cases, reflecting progress toward the government’s target of a child marriage-free Assam by 2026
