Shillong, August 19: Tura MDC Bernard N Marak has written to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in his capacity as convenor of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), urging him to facilitate the removal of the National People’s Party-led executive committee in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and install BJP leadership in its place.
In the letter dated Monday night, Marak, the lone BJP member in the 30-seat GHADC house, accused the Meghalaya government, also headed by the NPP, of “systemic failure” to uphold the council’s constitutional mandate and of persistently neglecting the 2014 Garo Accord signed with two rebel factions, including the breakaway ANVC-B group he once led.
He charged that the state administration has repeatedly delayed departmental transfers, withheld revenue shares and undermined the council’s capacity to serve its constituents, resulting in a financial collapse that left GHADC employees unpaid for 43 months and the body stripped of its core responsibilities.
As NEDA chair, Marak urged Sarma to press the NPP into relinquishing control of the GHADC to the BJP—highlighting that the saffron party falls short of a majority on its own and requires ally support to govern the autonomous council effectively.
