The Cachar district administration has launched the Cha Shramik Aashray Yojana, a state scheme aimed at providing resting facilities with toilets for tea garden workers.
District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, during a review meeting, instructed officials to identify suitable land in tea estates to ensure construction begins without delay. He added that the implementation process will be closely monitored to maintain transparency and quality.
Each shelter unit is estimated to cost ₹5.16 lakh. Estates up to 500 hectares will receive one unit, gardens between 500 and 700 hectares will get two units, and estates larger than 700 hectares will have three units.
Construction committees and dedicated bank accounts are being established to ensure smooth fund transfers and avoid administrative bottlenecks.
Officials stated that the new facilities will provide a clean and safe resting space for tea workers, addressing a long-standing demand. Tea cultivation is a key economic activity in Cachar, supporting thousands of families, and the initiative is expected to enhance living and working conditions in the region.
