Agartala, August 21, 2025: A shocking case of domestic violence surfaced in West Tripura after a woman allegedly hurled acid at her husband while riding pillion on his motorcycle. The incident took place on Wednesday and came to light on Thursday following police confirmation.

The victim, identified as 32-year-old farmer Shibaji Debbarma, suffered burns on his face and neck and was rushed to GBP Hospital in Agartala. Doctors have stated that his condition is currently stable.

Police sources said Shibaji was traveling with his wife, Sumitra Debbarma, to Chandpur when the attack occurred. Sumitra reportedly poured acid on him mid-journey, forcing Shibaji to halt the motorcycle and cry out for help. Local villagers intervened when she allegedly attempted to throw acid a second time.

Investigators suspect the assault may be rooted in long-standing domestic disputes. Early findings indicate that Sumitra herself may have been subjected to abuse, which could have provoked the attack.

While Shibaji is still undergoing treatment, no formal complaint has been lodged. Meanwhile, Sumitra fled the spot soon after the incident. Police have launched a search operation to trace her.

Officials stated that legal proceedings will begin once the victim is fit to give his statement.
