Arunachal Pradesh: Tawang Kicks Off Three-Day National Sports Day Celebrations

Itanagar, August 30: A vibrant three-day National Sports Day celebration commenced this morning at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Sports Stadium, Tawang. The event was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Tawang, Namgyal Angmo, IAS, and is being organized by the Department of Sports, Tawang, in collaboration with the Tawang District Archery Association and the Tawang Cycling Association.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries including Superintendent of Police, Dr. D.W. Thongon, Deputy Commander Tawang Brigade, Colonel M. Upadhyay, representatives from Monpa Mimang Tsogpa, Jt. Secretary Sherap, and Presidents and Secretaries of various sports

associations such as Tawang District Football Association (Jampa Tsering), Tawang District Sports Association (Urgen Dorjee), Tawang Cycling Association (Sangey Tsering), and Tawang District Archery Association (Tashi Tsering). Public leader Ngawang Tenzin, members of sports clubs, and local residents also marked their presence.

In her address, DC Namgyal Angmo commended the continuous efforts of local sports organizations in engaging the youth through various sporting activities. She encouraged young people to actively participate in sports, emphasizing how such experiences help in shaping discipline, teamwork, and character. She especially praised the dedication of budding archers for their commitment to mastering the traditional sport.

District Sports Officer Sange Tsering spoke on the significance of National Sports Day

and paid homage to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, whose legacy continues to inspire generations of Indian athletes. He extended gratitude to the Tawang District Archery Association for their support in making the event possible and announced upcoming activities, including a cycling rally from the Giant Buddha statue and other competitions until 31 August 2025.

The ceremony began with the dignitaries lighting lamps and paying floral tribute to Major Dhyan Chand. Young archers training under a professional coach were presented with tracksuits before competing in the much-anticipated archery tournament. Archery Competition Results:

The competition provided an excellent platform for both emerging and seasoned archers to showcase their skills, fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and community pride.

The day’s events concluded with an exhilarating football match between DC-XI and the Tawang District Archery Association team led by MLA Tawang Namgey Tsering. In a thrilling contest, the TDAA team emerged victorious with a close scoreline of 7–6.

The celebrations will continue with more sporting events over the next two days, bringing together athletes and sports enthusiasts from across the district in a shared celebration of fitness, teamwork, and the enduring legacy of India’s sporting heroes.
