Uma Chetry from Assam has become the first woman from the Northeast to be selected for the Indian women’s cricket squad for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was named as a replacement for the injured Yastika Bhatia.
Chetry, a native of Golaghat district, was already part of the India A squad for warm-up matches ahead of the World Cup and is also expected to feature in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia in Chandigarh.
Born in 2002, Chetry began playing cricket with a plastic bat gifted by her mother. Despite financial difficulties—her father is a small-time farmer—her family encouraged her sporting ambitions. She developed her skills under local coaches Raja Rahman and Mehboob Alam before gaining recognition from district sports officials.
Chetry started representing Assam at the state level in 2017. Her career took a major turn in 2023 when she was selected for the India A side in the ACC Emerging Asia Cup. She made her T20I debut against South Africa in 2024 and was part of the Indian squad that won gold at the Asian Games.
So far, Chetry has played seven T20Is, scoring 37 runs, and appeared in nine matches for UP Warriorz in this year’s Women’s Premier League. Her selection for the World Cup marks a historic milestone for women’s cricket in the Northeast.
