Sikkim Chief Minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, along with Krishna Kumari Rai, attended the State-level celebration of Indra Jatra 2025 at Kabrey, Namthang, on Saturday.
Indra Jatra, a major festival of the Newar community, honours Lord Indra, the god of rain and harvest, and seeks blessings for prosperity and a good agricultural yield.
The celebrations began with traditional cultural rituals of the Newar community, including Kumari Puja, chariot processions (Kumari Rath Yatra), Pulu Kissi (Elephant Dance), masked dances, and religious enactments. Puja Sthals presented by different Newar community groups (Sakhas) from across the state were also displayed to promote and preserve the community’s heritage.
The Chief Minister was joined by Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly MN Sherpa, Deputy Speaker Rajkumari Thapa, Council of Ministers, MLAs, Advisors, Chairpersons, APS to HCM (Namchi), DC (Namchi), SSP (Namchi), President of Sikkim Newa Guthi Mani Kumar Pradhan, along with other dignitaries and members of the public.
