Meghalaya Assembly Deputy Speaker Timothy D. Shira has resigned from his post, prompting the Assembly to hold an election for his successor on September 12, the final day of the ongoing autumn session.

Speaker Thomas A. Sangma confirmed he accepted Shira’s resignation and convened the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) to revise the Assembly calendar. He stated the move was in line with directives from the National People’s Party (NPP) high command, without giving further details.

Sources said Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma met Shira on Sunday night, hours before the resignation, in what is seen as part of the NPP’s internal reshuffle ahead of the 2028 elections.

At 79, Shira is one of Meghalaya’s most senior legislators, representing Resubelpara (ST) in North Garo Hills. He has served in the Assembly for over two decades and is a veteran in Garo Hills politics.

Shira’s resignation ends his second tenure as deputy Speaker. He first assumed the role in March 2018 after defeating Opposition candidate Winnerson Sangma and was re-elected unopposed in March 2023, opening the way for a new contest for the post.
