Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated the State Guest House Taraghar, a modern facility aimed at strengthening the state’s hospitality infrastructure and promoting its contemporary image.
Sangma called the guest house a milestone, linking it to initiatives since 2018, including the adoption of the state emblem and anthem, and highlighting Meghalaya’s progress in health, education, and tourism.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said Meghalaya had been without a dedicated guest house for nearly 25 years and described Taraghar as a “gift for the people of Meghalaya,” expressing hope that it would soon host national leaders, including the Prime Minister.
Chief Secretary Donald Philips Wahlang said the 18-room facility, which includes executive and VIP suites, would enhance the state’s profile and reduce recurring accommodation costs previously incurred at private hotels.
C.V.D. Diengdoh, Commissioner and Secretary of the General Administration Department, stated that Taraghar was constructed at a cost of ₹224.91 crore, with construction beginning in September 2022, and will be managed by Hotel Polo Towers to ensure proper maintenance.
The inauguration of Taraghar is seen as a key step in Meghalaya’s effort to offer world-class hospitality and showcase its evolving identity to visitors from across India and abroad.
