The Assam government has transferred Dhubri Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Leena Doley to the Assam Police Headquarters in Guwahati, following public backlash over a police lathi charge during a Koch Rajbongshi protest in Golakganj.
The transfer order, issued on Thursday by the Home (A) Department, stated that Doley, APS (DR-2002), will remain attached to the headquarters until further notice. The incident on September 10 occurred during a torchlight rally organised by the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRASU), demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, and left several protesters injured.
Debasish Borah, APS (DR-2004), Commandant of the 4th Assam Police Battalion, has been given temporary charge of the Dhubri SSP office in addition to his current responsibilities.
In a related move, disciplinary action was taken against local police officials. The Officer-in-Charge of Golakganj police station was suspended, while the Officer-in-Charge of Gauripur police station was placed under the reserve clause.
