Agartala, October 7, 2025: The long-pending case concerning the village committee elections in Tripura is likely to be heard by the Supreme Court on October 27 or 28, according to former Tipra Motha supremo and MDC Pradyot Kishore Debbarman.

Pradyot shared the update on social media, stating that the Chief Justice had heard their submission in the apex court. “The Chief Justice has heard our statement in the Supreme Court today. The hearing may be held on October 27 or 28,” he wrote.

The last village committee elections in Tripura were held on February 24, 2016, with results declared three days later. As per norms, the polls are to be conducted every five years. However, despite the expiry of the committees’ term in 2021, fresh elections have not been held. The polls were initially deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but no steps were taken to reschedule them even after normalcy returned.

A case filed in the Tripura High Court earlier led to an order directing that elections be completed within six months, yet no progress was made. Consequently, the matter reached the Supreme Court, which on August 25 issued a notice seeking an explanation for the delay.

Pradyot, who had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court, has consistently argued that the absence of elections has deprived Tripura’s tribal population of administrative representation and fundamental rights. Expressing optimism on Tuesday, he said he hopes the judiciary will finally deliver a solution to this prolonged issue.
