Sikkim Legislative Assembly Leaders Attend Commonwealth Parliamentary Events In Barbados

The Speaker, Mingma Norbu Sherpa, and Deputy Speaker, Raj Kumari Thapa, of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, along with the Secretary and Principal Director of the Assembly Secretariat, attended a series of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) events in Barbados on 8th October 2025.

The delegation took part in a briefing meeting of the Indian delegation convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the Tiffany Room, Ross University, Bridgetown. Following this, Sherpa and the Secretary attended the CPA Small Branches Steering Committee Meeting, where discussions included reports from the previous meeting, membership matters, and implementation of the 2026 work plan consultation. The meeting also re-elected Adrian Gabriel of Guernsey, British Islands and Mediterranean Region, as Vice-Chairperson of the CPA Small Branches for a second term.

Meanwhile, Thapa and the Principal Director attended the CWP Conference Session on “Overcoming the Barriers to the Involvement of Women with Disabilities in Politics” at the Frangipani Room, Ross University. The CPA Secretary-General also briefed the delegation on the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference and Workshops.

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker also participated in a workshop on “Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Digital Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide,” chaired by Om Birla.

The day concluded with a reception at the Courtyard of the Parliament of Barbados, hosted by Acting Prime Minister Santia J. O. Bradshaw.
