Meghalaya BJP Vice President Bernard N Marak has informed the Centre about alleged illegal uranium extraction in the Garo Hills region, sparking concerns about safety and environmental risks. A fact-finding report submitted by Marak’s committee reveals systematic tip-offs before official raids, allowing illegal operators to evade scrutiny, suggesting a possible nexus between authorities and coal traders.
The committee’s preliminary findings indicate uranium is being transported in small quantities by private parties using high-end vehicles, beyond government oversight. Villagers have witnessed these activities, including a private vehicle allegedly ferrying uranium ore. The report triggers internal enquiries, urging central authorities to expand the scope of investigation.
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council has already opposed uranium mining in Meghalaya, refusing to grant No Objection Certificates. The Supreme Court has directed Meghalaya to detail measures against illegal mining, warning it’s the “last chance” before further action.
