Agartala, October 14, 2025: The Bru People Organisation (BPO) has submitted a memorandum to Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, Chief Minister of Tripura requesting a corrigendum regarding a statement made during his address as Chief Guest at the 33rd State Level Hojagiri Festival on October 8, 2025, in Bogapha, South Tripura.
The statement, which referred to the Reang (Bru) community as originating from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh and as second settlers in Tripura, has caused unintended concern and misunderstanding among the Bru (Riang) community. Despite the BPO acknowledging no deliberate misrepresentation, the remarks’ widespread circulation on social and digital media has led to emotional distress among community members.
In its appeal, the BPO highlighted that the Rajmala, Tripura’s authentic historical chronicle, records the Bru (Riang) as loyal citizens and valiant warriors of the ancient Tripura Kingdom. Notably, during the reign of Maharaja Dhanya Manikya (1490-1515 A.D.), generals Raikchak and Raiksom heroically defended the kingdom against invasions by Husain Shah of Bengal, capturing a cannon later installed at Kaman Chowmuhani, Agartala, as a symbol of their bravery.
The organisation further emphasized the community’s deep roots in Tripura, citing their participation in the Mahabharata war during King Trilochan’s reign, around 3000 years before Christ, and their intertwined cultural heritage with the region. The BPO urged the Chief Minister to issue a corrigendum clarifying the ancestral and historical identity of the Bru (Riang) community, asserting their status as aboriginal sons of Tripura’s soil.
The BPO believes such a gesture would heal wounded sentiments, reinforce social harmony, and stand as a testament to the Chief Minister’s commitment to unity and truth. The memorandum, signed by BPO President S. K. Msha and Information Secretary Simson Reang, reflects the community’s gratitude for the leader’s guidance and dedication to all communities.
