Agartala, October 15, 2025: Agartala Public School, English Medium became the first institution in Tripura to officially celebrate October 15, the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam as ‘Students Day’, marking a significant stride in honouring the legacy of India’s 11th President and renowned scientist.

Held at Sukanta Academy auditorium, the event drew widespread attention and praise, with Tripura’s Science, Technology & Environment Minister Animesh Debbarma pledging to advocate for state-wide recognition of ‘Students Day’ in the upcoming cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha. “This noble initiative deserves institutional support. From next year, I will propose that the government officially observe October 15 as Students Day,” Debbarma announced.

The theme for this year’s celebration “Empowering Students as Agents of Innovation and Change” echoed Dr Kalam’s lifelong commitment to education and youth empowerment. Minister Debbarma emphasized that innovation knows no socioeconomic boundaries, citing Dr Kalam’s humble beginnings and transformative contributions to India’s missile technology. “Artificial Intelligence will shape future warfare and innovation. Students must prepare to meet these challenges,” he added.

The minister also lauded the school’s founder Arun Nath for his vision-driven approach to education, highlighting the institution’s commitment to societal development over profit. “Agartala Public School may face financial constraints, but its mission is noble. Just as Tripura Observer rose to become the state’s leading newspaper, this school too will rise,” he said.

Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder commended the school’s efforts to instill civic responsibility and national pride among students. “Dr Kalam’s legacy continues to inspire. Observing Students Day ensures that young minds remain connected to his ideals of service and innovation,” Majumder noted.

Retired professor Purnendu Kanti Das reminded the audience that UNESCO had recognized Dr Kalam’s birth anniversary as Students Day in 2010. “His journey from newspaper boy to President of India is a testament to perseverance. Schools must ignite that spark in every child,” he said, urging students to embrace curiosity and lifelong learning.

School Secretary Arun Nath expressed hope that the Tripura government would soon adopt the observance officially. “It’s unfortunate that this day hasn’t been recognized yet. We’ve taken the first step, and we believe the government will follow,” Nath stated.

The event was attended by students, teachers, guardians, and non-teaching staff, all united in celebrating the spirit of learning and innovation that Dr Kalam championed throughout his life.
