The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has recorded statements from three more members of the Assamese community in Singapore. Assam Special Director General of Police (Special DGP) Munna Prasad Gupta said on Wednesday that Sushmita Goswami, Pratim Bhuyan, and Debojyoti Hazarika — who were reportedly present during Garg’s final moments in Singapore — appeared before the CID office in Guwahati and are being interrogated.
Gupta informed that out of 11 individuals summoned by the SIT, ten have already appeared. Only one person, Wajed Ahmed, a Singaporean citizen, is yet to be examined, as certain formalities are being completed to facilitate his travel to India. “Ahmed has expressed his willingness to come, and we expect him to arrive soon,” Gupta said.
Earlier, Rupkamal Kalita was the first to respond to the summons on October 7 after the initial deadline had passed.
The Special DGP also dismissed a purported post-mortem report circulating on social media as fake, clarifying that the official report received by the police carries the signature of the legitimate doctor. “We will investigate if the fake report was circulated intentionally to mislead people,” Gupta said, urging citizens not to share unverified information online.
Gupta further stated that the Singapore authorities, through the Indian High Commission, have sought details regarding the Assam Police team’s proposed visit to the island nation. “We have replied positively to their email. The request for invoking the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) has also reached Singapore, and we hope to receive clearance soon,” he added.
He assured that the investigation into Garg’s death is progressing well in Assam. Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most celebrated cultural icons, passed away in Singapore on September 19 while swimming in the sea.
