Agartala, October 18, 2025: The dispute surrounding the newly inaugurated park at College Tilla, developed under the Smart City project, continues to escalate as concerns over environmental degradation mount. Despite its formal opening, the park has come under scrutiny following a complaint lodged with the Human Rights Commission by the Environment and Water Body Conservation Forum.

In response to the complaint, a joint delegation comprising officials from the Human Rights Commission, the Land and Revenue Department and members of the conservation forum conducted an on-site inspection on Saturday. The visit aimed to assess the ecological impact of the park’s construction on the College Tilla water body, a known habitat for migratory birds.

Speaking to reporters here in Agartala city, commission representatives expressed concern that the transformation of the area into a commercial hub could severely disrupt local biodiversity. “This water body has long served as a sanctuary for migratory birds. The recent developments risk altering its ecological balance,” one official noted.

During the inspection, the team evaluated bird movement patterns, the condition of the water body, and the sustainability of commercial activities within the park premises. Authorities have assured that the matter is being taken seriously and further assessments are underway to determine appropriate action.

The Environment and Water Body Conservation Forum, which initiated the complaint, has called for immediate measures to safeguard the ecological integrity of the site. The outcome of the commission’s inquiry is expected to influence future development plans around sensitive natural habitats in the region.
