Agartala, October 31, 2025: Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Friday said that Tripura has the potential to establish a Hydrogen Valley Hubfor blending and export of Green Hydrogen, leveraging the state’s unique geographical and infrastructural advantages.

Speaking at the Regional Workshop on Renewable Energy for the North Eastern Zone held in Guwahati, Nath informed that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) may extend financial and technical support for conducting a pre-feasibility study for setting up Small Hydro Power Plants across the state.

Highlighting the state’s achievements, he said Tripura has secured first position in implementing the PM-KUSUM Scheme among all North Eastern states. Nath received the award from Union Minister for Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, during the event.

Addressing the growing energy demand, Nath said, “With increasing population and development, the need for energy is also rising. Tripura, being a hilly state, faces challenges like geographical isolation and infrastructural constraints, but we are determined to move forward through renewable energy initiatives.”

He added that the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) under the Department of Power has undertaken remarkable initiatives to implement renewable energy schemes such as PM-KUSUM, PM-DevINE, PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Grameen Baazar Alok Jyoti Prakalpa, and solar micro-grid projects, particularly benefiting rural communities.

Enumerating the progress under these schemes, Nath informed that 3 lakh study lamps have been distributed across 3,335 schools, 15,000 solar street lights have been installed in 1,012 village markets, and 30,000 solar street lights have been set up along village roads and other public places. He added that 126 solar high masts have been installed at rural markets, 6,051 solar pumps under PM-KUSUM (B) are being used to irrigate 12,102 acres of land, while 584 agriculture pumps have been solarized under PM-KUSUM (C). Additionally, 454 solar pumps have been installed for drinking water projects, and 289 remote habitations have been electrified through solar micro-grids.

He further revealed that 16,951 consumers have registered under the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with 1,186 households already installing solar systems totaling 4 MW, and 988 consumers receiving government subsidies.

“So far, 48.53 MW of green energy systems have been installed, and the state targets 500 MW by 2030,” he said.

The Power Minister added that achieving this goal would generate an estimated 4,234 employment opportunities in Tripura by 2030, emphasizing the need for skilled manpower development.

“Green Hydrogen is another promising sector in which India has taken a global lead. Tripura has the potential to establish a Hydrogen Valley Hub for blending and export, in line with the National Green Hydrogen Mission Policy of the Government of India,” Nath said.

He also stressed the importance of a dedicated renewable energy policy for the North East, along with capacity building and manpower support, to encourage private sector participation in renewable and decentralized energy initiatives.

Power Secretary Abhishek Singh and TREDA Director General (In-Charge) Debabrata Sukla Das were also present at the workshop.
