Agartala, November 04, 2025: Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Tuesday highlighted the crucial role of the judiciary and press in strengthening democracy, urging those in power to exercise their authority responsibly to prevent public distress and uphold accountability in governance.
He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a three-day media workshop for journalists from print, electronic, web, and photo media, organized by the Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department in collaboration with the Agartala Press Club.
“The functioning of the judiciary and the press is vital to a responsible democracy,” Dr. Saha said, calling upon leaders to use their powers judiciously. “Those who come to power must play their role responsibly so that people do not suffer under any circumstances.”
Reflecting on his long association with the media, the Chief Minister said, “In a vibrant democracy, the role of the press cannot be overstated. As someone connected to the media even before entering public life, I deeply understand its significance.” He also recalled his long acquaintance with Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar, adding that journalism has a transformative role in society.
Citing Article 19(1) of the Constitution, Dr. Saha said freedom of the press is not just a constitutional right but a cornerstone of democracy. “While the press may not be officially recognized as one of the four pillars, its role is undeniably vital, much like the judiciary,” he noted.
He also condemned past attempts to suppress the media, including the killing of two journalists in Tripura. “Despite limitations in jurisdiction, I have persistently pursued justice in these cases, driven by a conviction that delay must not mean denial,” he said.
Emphasizing the media’s watchdog role, Dr. Saha said, “When individuals ascend to positions of authority, there is often a tendency toward imbalance. In such moments, the press plays a corrective role, ensuring transparency and accountability.”
The Chief Minister shared that he regularly monitors press clippings and holds virtual meetings with district officials to ensure transparency in governance. “Our government has instituted robust systems of checks and balances to uphold good governance,” he added.
Dr. Saha also referred to the 2023 Press Freedom Index, where India ranks 161 out of 180 countries, saying the figure reflects a worrying global trend. “Innovation and free flow of information can only flourish when press freedom is protected. Such freedom strengthens democracy and supports cultural diversity,” he said.
He urged journalists to remain vigilant and constructive in their criticism. “The people are the true sovereigns of society. If the government fails to perform its duties, point it out — we will listen,” he said.
Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar lauded the Chief Minister’s proactive engagement with the media since assuming office. “Media workshops have resumed after Dr. Saha took charge,” he said, emphasizing the importance of regular training and collaboration with national institutions like IIMS.
Sarkar also cautioned against the misuse of social media. “Even prominent figures, including the Chief Minister, are being targeted. Legislation has been introduced, and I appeal to the CM to streamline its use. Malicious content cannot be allowed to flourish,” he said. Highlighting the potential of artificial intelligence, Sarkar urged the media fraternity to use AI tools responsibly to curb misinformation.
ICA Secretary Apurba Roy reaffirmed that media functions as the fourth pillar of democracy and that the government remains committed to the welfare and development of media professionals.
Earlier, ICA Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee welcomed participants and announced that 356 journalists have registered for the three-day workshop, which features seven expert speakers. “The workshop will cover topics such as Ethical Journalism, Artificial Intelligence in Media, and Conflict Reporting,” he said, adding that the initiative aims to strengthen the professional capacity of journalists in the evolving media landscape.
