Agartala, November 05, 2025: An eight-year-old girl from Dasda, Kanchanpur in North Tripura has begun her journey to recovery after battling a life-threatening neurological condition. The child, who was admitted to Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital on June 17, 2025, with high fever, seizures, and signs of acute neurological distress, has shown remarkable improvement following intensive medical intervention.
Initially diagnosed with Acute Encephalitis Syndrome by pediatric specialists, the girl’s condition deteriorated rapidly, necessitating invasive mechanical ventilation. Subsequent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tests confirmed Japanese Encephalitis, a high-risk infection with a significant mortality rate. During her time on ventilation, she developed Tension Pneumothorax, requiring an intercostal chest tube insertion. As her condition remained critical, doctors performed a 14-day tracheostomy to facilitate long-term ventilation.
She remained on mechanical ventilation for 60 consecutive days — the longest such pediatric case at the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Gradually, her condition stabilized, and she transitioned to intermittent oxygen therapy before beginning to breathe independently through the tracheostomy tube.
Her treatment included costly medications such as Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) and regular physiotherapy. Thanks to the support of Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Kanak Chowdhury, all medical services were provided free of charge. The pediatric team including Prof. (Dr.) Sanjib Kumar Debbarma, Dr. Shribas Das, Dr. Ripon Debbarma, Dr. Chayan Sarkar, Dr. Mrinmoy Das, and Dr. Amitabh Baidya played a pivotal role in her recovery.
On November 4, the hospital’s pediatric ward celebrated the girl’s birthday, marking a symbolic milestone in her recovery. Though she continues to face residual neurological damage and joint contractures, doctors remain optimistic about further improvement.
Speaking at a press conference, Prof. (Dr.) Sanjib Kumar Debbarma emphasized the importance of timely medical intervention, noting that early treatment was crucial in preventing further complications. He also highlighted the compassionate care provided by the hospital’s medical team, showcasing the humane face of public healthcare.
This case serves as a powerful reminder of the life-saving potential of prompt and dedicated medical care and the resilience of a young child who fought her way back to life.
