Three major women’s organisations — the All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Ereipak Enaat Chanura Loinasillon Apunba Lup (EECHAL), and the All Manipur Tammi Chingmi Apunba Lup — on Thursday voiced strong objections to the state government’s preparations for the upcoming Sangai Festival.

Addressing the media at the Manipur Press Club, leaders of the women’s bodies said it was inappropriate to organise a celebratory festival when thousands of people continue to live in relief camps, free movement across highways remains restricted, and citizens are enduring some of the harshest living conditions in recent memory.

The MAPI Council and the United Peoples’ Front (UPF) have also appealed to the Manipur government to cancel this year’s Sangai Festival, citing the prevailing situation. In a statement, the Council said that holding the festival at this time “amounts to ignoring the continuing pain and tears of thousands affected by the ongoing crisis.”

Several other civil society organisations had earlier announced plans to boycott the event if it goes ahead against public sentiment.

As preparations for the state’s biggest tourism festival continue, voices from various sections of society are urging the government to prioritise restoring normalcy and addressing the plight of the displaced before proceeding with celebrations.
