Kohima, Nov 11: Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday paid tribute to the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the Battle of Kohima in World War II. The ceremony, held at the historic battlefield, marked the state government’s first official observance of Remembrance Day.

Rio emphasized the state government’s commitment to observe the day annually in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to honour those who fought for peace and freedom. He also recognized the role of the Naga people, including men, women, and children, who guided and supported Allied troops under extreme hardship.

“Their courage and loyalty shaped the outcome of the battle and remain among the proudest chapters of our history,” Rio said, calling for the memories of conflict to be transformed into a message of peace, reconciliation, and unity.

Distinguished guests at the event included Bhaarat Dave, Deputy Head of Mission, UK in Kolkata, and Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
