Guwahati, Nov 11: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday called for national unity to prevent terrorism from gaining ground in the wake of the deadly explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort metro station that killed at least 12 people on Monday evening.
Speaking to reporters at a programme in Raha, Nagaon district, Sarma condemned the attack and said police in Assam were closely monitoring social media users posting content that appeared to celebrate or justify the incident. “If such persons are from Assam, we will take strict action, including arrests,” he warned.
The chief minister highlighted that a significant cache of explosives had recently been seized from certain individuals, indicating the possibility of a larger conspiracy. “The blast in Delhi is highly condemnable. Definitely, a big design was there. Hopefully, we will get a clearer picture by evening,” he added.
Expressing concern over social media trends, Sarma noted that some users had posted messages or emojis showing support for terrorism, similar to the pattern observed after the Pahalgam attack earlier this year. “It means they are supporting the terrorists. We are conducting background checks and, if necessary, arrests will be made to ensure terrorism cannot revive or be encouraged in Assam,” he said.
Sarma stressed the importance of unity among citizens, asserting, “The people must come together so that terrorism cannot rear its head again.”
